Write Better English
Making the Right Connections
by
Peter Gibson
Many careers, whether in business, architecture, engineering, or law, demand the ability to write clear, accurate English. Before we’re even hired, our job applications and cover letters must be well-written and organized. But how do we write clearly and accurately? How can we improve our writing skills? By understanding that written English follows fixed patterns and structures. Write Better English: Making the Right Connections explains these structures and how to use the building blocks of English to write clearly and cohesively. This writing manual builds from words and clauses to sentences, paragraphs, and essays, while giving examples of traps to avoid and techniques to use. It introduces how to: • recognize the basic elements of sentences, • distinguish between main and supporting ideas, • learn how to connect ideas into logical sequences, and • express one’s thoughts in writing without losing clarity or meaning. More than anything, this guide shows how good writing starts with clear thinking. Clarity doesn’t have to mean linear. It’s about understanding relationships, whether that’s between words and clauses or between ideas. The more we comprehend these connections, the better we will write. Informative and practical, Write Better English presents writing as a craft we can learn, rather than an art form requiring talent. It is a must read for anyone looking to improve their English writing skills.
Peter Gibson has taught English for over thirty years. After earning his bachelor’s degree and postgraduate certificate in Education, he worked in England for many years before emigrating to Canada. He has taught English across many levels, from ESL, TOEFL, pre-SAT, SAT I and II, and GRE to high school and university. In his experience, he has seen many capable students struggle with expressing their ideas in writing, even though they understand the material. Inspired by their struggles, and hoping to help, Peter wrote Write Better English: Making the Right Connections. This is his first book. When he’s not teaching, he enjoys hiking, cryptic crossword puzzles, reading, and sports. He lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.
