Worship
More than a Song
by
James D Janzen
Worship content and styles need not be complicated or mysterious, leading to tension and disunity. When we understand how scripture defines worship, we easily avoid disagreements and misunderstandings. Worship is like a building with • a cornerstone • a six-part foundation • strong walls (conditions and activities labelled as worship in scripture) • a roof (to link all aspects of worship) We use one word, worship, to describe church music, but scripture uses nine additional words defined in this book. This book's careful use of scripture moves the reader to become the true worshiper God seeks (John 4:23).
James Janzen has taught, developed, and practiced a unique theology of worship in our church for 14 years. All I can say is, “It works, and it works well!" Rather than preferences, trends, emotions, fads, and opinions, James presents clear biblical principles that any group of believers can use to develop biblically meaningful worship and music ministries that glorify God and unify His people. James Janzen lives and breathes worship, creativity, and education. His well-worn Canadian passport is a window into extensive international teaching experience. Since directing Prairie College's Worship and Performing Arts Program (1997-2008), James has been working with SEND International, Music in World Cultures and other organizations to develop resources for K-12 schools, churches, and post-secondary institutions. He seeks to nurture the artistic temperament and help artists find their place in the church.
