Field Guide to Athlete Chaplaincy
by Steve S Sellers

In the growing field of sport chaplaincy, resources to guide chaplains in their day-to-day ministries are few. The Field Guide to Sport Chaplaincy fills that gap. Whether you are wondering how to introduce yourself to a sports team, trying to build rapport with athletes, coaches, or their families, or ministering during challenging times, the Field Guide to Sport Chaplaincy has you covered. Chaplains frequently bring hope, encouragement, and comfort in many of life’s most challenging circumstances; the Field Guide offers instruction around ministering during injury and tragedy, explaining how the chaplain can bring God’s presence, hope, and encouragement into times of stress—to nonbelievers and believers alike. For daily duties, the Field Guide provides advice for gaining trust, disciple making, and conducting sport chapels. For celebratory times and times of mourning, it provides a step-by-step guide for officiating at weddings and funerals. Meant as a quick reference resource, the Field Guide directs the sport chaplain in all aspects of their ministry. Written by a chaplain for other chaplains, the Field Guide is predictably laid out, so you can find information quickly—as the need arises. Personal stories from the author’s experience guide you into the practical application of the biblical principles that are foundational to the ministry. Bulleted lists ensure that you can scan the material, gathering knowledge quickly and in easily digested chunks. This succinct, hands-on guide equips the sport chaplain to help meet the athlete’s unique needs within their unique lifestyles.

"If you’ve considered ministering to high level athletes and coaches as a sport chaplain (or are already doing so), Steve's book is a great resource. Over the 25 years I've known Steve, I have seen Steve demonstrate well how it’s correctly done. My wife Jeannie and I have served 40 years as a sport chaplain couple. We strongly recommend Steve's book, he explains it well." —Tom Lamphere, Minnesota Vikings NFL Chaplain. "Steve has been a trusted mentor to me for close to 20 years and I have leaned on him for spiritual and personal advice throughout our relationship. In his book I can see his familiar down to earth nature that he has humbly imparted wisdom to me for all these years, first as an athlete and later a coach. I've been so blessed to have Steve in my corner and through his book you can learn from his experience and bless the next generation of athletes and coaches just like Steve has done so faithfully!" —Lyndon Rush: Bobsled Olympic Bronze medalist, Bobsled World Cup champion and World Championships silver and bronze medalist, National and Olympic team coach
