Pastoral Care Teams in Churches
by Robert K. MacKenzie

Pastoral Care Teams in Churches is a comprehensive guide tailored for church members and leaders seeking to initiate or expand a sustainable pastoral care ministry led by laypeople. Designed to lend support to clergy, this book provides a practical blueprint for establishing and maintaining pastoral care teams over the long term. Discover how care teams can become empathetic listeners, provide routine pastoral visits, and create a supportive environment for church members to share their difficulties. The spiritual care provided not only strengthens the faith of recipients but also enriches the lives of those offering care, nurturing a vibrant congregational life. MacKenzie, with his broad pastoral experience, offers guidance on common spiritual care situations and provides a curated list of accessible resources, offering both theoretical insights and practical tools for community-based, non-directive care.

Robert K. Mackenzie holds a pastoral ministry degree from Acadia Divinity College and earned his PhD in biblical studies from McGill University. He has served pastorates in Nova Scotia and Ontario and lectured at universities and a French-language seminary in Quebec, as well as contributing to the spiritual well-being of congregations as an elder. He brings this wealth of experience to his writing. In 1997, Robert authored a scholarly work in biblical studies, The Author of the Apocalypse: A Review of the Prevailing Hypothesis of Jewish-Christian Authorship, published by Edwin Mellen Press. Currently residing in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, with his wife Barbara, Robert continues to make significant contributions to the field of pastoral care. He serves as a board member and past chair of the Ottawa Pastoral Care Training Program and is a dedicated member of the pastoral care team at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Ottawa.
