Born Of Ash And Shadow
by
Hayley Sadlier
Ember Fletcher is a warrior, trained from birth to keep her people, the Kunal, safe from the dreaded Nanaldie invaders. One day following a surprise Nanaldie attack, Ember and her younger brother, Iron, are taken captive by the enemy. Iron gets away, but the Nanaldie take Ember back to their village, where she is imprisoned in the very cells where her own people once held their prisoners prior to executing them. Rather than kill her, however, her captors sell her as a slave to a Nanaldie general. Though resistant at first, a bond forms between Ember, the general, and his family. As their relationship develops, secrets from her own past are revealed that cause her to question everything she was raised to believe about herself and her so-called enemies. As war threatens once again, Ember’s loyalties are torn between serving the person she was and the person she now knows herself to be.
Haley Sadlier’s writing career started when she was sick and put on bedrest at age nine or ten. Unable to run and play outside, participate in her regular hobbies, or watch TV, she turned to drawing and reading to pass the time. She quickly fell in love with books and the way they allowed her to escape from reality. Realizing she wanted to do the same thing for someone else, she began writing. Eight years later, she has published her first novel, and she hopes it won’t be her last. When she’s not writing, Hayley enjoys reading, drawing, hiking, snowboarding, archery, running, dancing, and all sorts of other activities that inspire her imagination.
