Dmitri: His Amazing Story
by
R. D. Huzul
It is the late 1930s, in Western Ukraine, at the onset of World War II, and the life of Dmitri Hrechko, a simple farm boy, barely fifteen years of age, is about to change forever. When the Red Army comes to his village, gathering young men for war, Dmitri must decide whether to be forced to fight with the Russians or leave and fight for his homeland. At this time, the Ukraine is part of the former USSR, and there are rumours that Hitler and the Nazis had vowed to liberate the Soviet republics should they succeed. After careful thought, and with the ability to speak Ukrainian, Romanian, and German, Dmitri decides to run away and join the Germans, in hopes that the rumours are true. His insatiable desire for learning and his unheralded leadership ability and fortitude lead him quickly up the ranks to a life full of adventure and romance. But along his journey through Europe and Africa, he sees and hears things that disturb him and he must again decide what is most important to him. At times, filled with joy and excitement, while others, sadness and despair, based on true events, Dmitri: His Amazing Story is ultimately a novel not of war, but of hope, love, and compassion.
Thank you to my family members and friends who have inspired me with their reflections and memories of their youth that have helped me in the formation of a wonderful and insightful story of their lives during a time period of history that was perhaps the most tumultuous. In human history. The result is a not only an amalgam of an actual life fictionalized in a true life fictional account of war and romance but also an endearing adventure of the human struggle.
