Annie
Where Did The Sunshine Go?
by Donna Forster

Addiction, abuse, and evenings spent working on the street characterize Annie’s Story: Where Did the Sunshine Go? Based on real-life events, this fictionalized account is told from the perspective of the author, who volunteers as a street outreach worker on behalf of a church ministry.

The story centres on the author’s work with a young woman named Annie, who flees her hometown of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, for Victoria, British Columbia, where she becomes a sex worker to support herself and her kids. Annie’s complicated story of drug addiction and abuse by her estranged husband, Len, is loosely told in a diary format, which unfolds over four years.

Along with providing insight into the main character's tumultuous life, Annie’s Story reveals the day-to-day challenges of supporting sex workers, breaking the cycle of abuse and addiction, and navigating the health, social services, and justice systems.
