Mafetai and Palahna Malysh
A Journey to Canada
John .T. Malysh
This publication was twenty-five years of genealogical research by our father, John T. Malysh (1919-2014). He was a second-generation Canadian of Ukrainian descent who grew up witnessing his parent’s struggles. For him, it was an ambitious project and it progressed in stages over decades with him gaining a greater sense of purpose to continue as every piece of information was gathered.
I really appreciate all the time and effort that you and your family has put into making the "Malysh History" happen. Your dad was a truly amazing man and if not for him, we wouldn't have this wonderful record of our "Malysh" family.
In all of us there is a hunger, marrow-deep, to know our heritage- to know who we are and where we have come from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning. No matter what our attainments in life, there is still a vacuum, an emptiness, and the most disquieting loneliness.” ― Alex Haley
This publication was twenty-five years of genealogical research by our father, John T. Malysh (1919-2014). He was a second-generation Canadian of Ukrainian descent who grew up witnessing his parent’s struggles. From early on in his life, he understood the importance of hard work which rewarded him with a comfortable lifestyle, however, he remembered a childhood filled with frugality and much happiness. These memories became a life long endeavour of documenting his grandparents and parents’ experiences of their life from the Ukraine to Western Canada. It included their birthplace and its history, their traditions, the challenges and overall motivation for a free 160-acre homestead in the Canadian West.
For our father, the process of this genealogical journey was therapeutic, especially connecting with different generations of the Malysh families for assistance with ancestral information. His work was dedicated to his family’s journey and of the utmost importance was getting the life story documented as accurately as possible. For him, it was an ambitious project and it progressed in stages over decades with him gaining a greater sense of purpose to continue as every piece of information was gathered.
Even until weeks before his death, he persisted knowing that his compilation was a living document. For our father, it was a labour of love and a genuine pride in family. It was an opportunity to meet and to connect with family members. It was an opportunity to share and learn more about the Malysh lineage.
