Favor or Luck?
A mini autobiography by a Hybrid Christian
by Patrick W. Kennedy

The phrase ‘God of Surprises’ should not be an unfamiliar term to any Christian. Throughout Scripture, we read that God has acted in ways that, at times, seem to contradict logic. The problem for us is the logic that God seemingly contradicts is OUR logic, OUR approach to life, and how to live it. More to the point, WE are contradicting God’s perfect logic, His plan, His desire for creation. As a result, we sometimes find ourselves saying,”Why me, Lord?” I’ve had my share of such missing-the-mark moments as an ordinary, trying-hard-but-sin-cursed member of the human race. But the last Why moment resulted in my writing this message. Why would the creator and sustain-er of the universe want me to experience such life-changing opportunities as I have described here? I think He means my example to serve as a message to all people, especially the skeptical ones, of the actuality of His promises, such as in Psalm 32:8 or Proverbs 16:9. Try adding one word to that question. Make it “Why not me, Lord?”

Coincidence? Luck? Favor? Blessing? When you, dear Christian, experience God’s favor, do you know it? Or do you just think you are lucky? This is about one man’s encounter with that blessing. Favor from God comes upon any true believer. Would you recognize it or just call it coincidence? A mini autobiography by Patrick W. Kennedy

I never thought of myself as particularly “religious.” I was educated in Catholic schools until graduate school at Penn State. Basic Christian principles, always with a Catholic overlay, plus a Mother who was a very prayerful person, guided my early years. Truth is, I’ve become a sort of hybrid spiritual disciple. My wife’s health required a move to Atlanta after a lifetime in the Northeast. Here the Hospice Chaplain is very likely to be a Southern Baptist pastor. The Chaplain who visited her knew Holy Scripture — God’s Word — I’m inclined to say, “forward, backward, upside down and inside out.” He was a teacher unlike any I had ever had. A lot of scriptural ignorance, doubt, and misunderstanding was wiped away (though some new issues have cropped up). But I have NO doubt about the experiences I’ve written about here. I hope you won’t either, hybriddisciple@blogspot.com.
