Behind the Green Door
From the land of Windmills to the Land of the Maple Leaf
by Erna de Burger Fex

Behind the Green Door is a collection of stories that will make you laugh but also may bring a tear to your eye while you read in vivid detail the challenges of an immigrant child and the struggles of being uprooted to a new land without understanding the language and traditions of this strange new world.

“I’ve always had a great fondness for Erna’s column. Personal, poignant and often irreverent, she brought readers into her home, her family and her heart with her reflections on life, love and family. After nearly 50 years, the Northern Life newspaper printed its final edition in March 2020. I’m so pleased that Erna’s singular viewpoint that graced our pages for so many years will live on for a new generation of readers to enjoy.” —Mark Gentili, Editor of the Northern Life newspaper

When she began writing her regular column “Reflections” for Northern Life newspaper in 2007, Erna de Burger Fex’s goal was to make people laugh and creatively capture life as an immigrant in a new country and community. With grace, humour and at times poignant sadness, her column shared the joys of family life and the challenges of living and aging in Northern Ontario. More than 10 years later, she has earned countless laughs, tears, and applause from mothers, teachers, and miners and people of all walks of life who continue to thank her for the pleasure they got from reading “Reflections”. De Burger Fex puts it all in loving perspective in this book as she looks back on remembrances of blueberry picking to pay for their first house, why wooden shoes are the best, meeting Princess Diana, and heading deep into the nickel mines to name a few. She is deservedly proud of her accomplishments at becoming a dedicated teacher and an integral part of her community.
