Into the Shadows: An Illustrated Memoir of Brain Injury
by Krista J. Breithaupt

Into the Shadows is a story of survival and recovery from a traumatic brain injury. Dr. Krista Breithaupt was enjoying a family vacation when she suffered an aneurism that left her hospitalized for months. This book is an account of brain injury and her long journey of renewal, rediscovery, and growth. This story lends special insight and an intimate voice to a very common but misunderstood condition which changes the lives of the sufferer and those who care for her. Into the Shadows is a touching true story that will inspire the reader to examine their own sense of self and the strength we draw from the habits of life, work, and love that define us.

“Krista is a walking miracle. To overcome such a serious brain injury is inspiring enough, but to have been struck down at the peak of her career, stripped of her ability to walk, talk, and interact normally with the world she knew, and to now have the courage to retell her story to help others is an incredible achievement. Krista is a brave and enlightening woman who now shares her experiences, strength, and hope with others in such a joyous and selfless manner. This book is a wonderful testament to the true depths and powers of the human spirit.” — Anthony James Donnelly (author, artist, actor). “Krista’s story is an articulate, compelling journey through tragedy. She heart-wrenchingly describes her losses. Yet throughout, the indomitable spirit that we saw throughout her professional life shines through, making hers a journey of discovery and triumph. Krista’s incredibly brave journey should be a mandatory read for every young medical student. Krista’s indomitable spirit, determination, even stubbornness, shine through this moving story.” — Dr. Ian Bowmer, M.D.
