The book is about a boy named Zach who lives in an orphanage. The story takes place in 1963. A very rich madman named Alister McCain buys the land Zach's home is on. He makes a wish on a star and the star transforms him into a boy named Tom. Tom is a starlight child who has the ability to grant wishes. Tom helps Zach save his home and helps Zach figure out his sexuality

As a child I did not know what being gay was. When I first heard what the word meant I did not know it really existed until I was 10 years old. When I was a child I noticed I was attracted to the same sex. I thought; "everyone thinks this way and we just don't talk about it". When I was in my teens one of my friends had a crush on me and I got scared. Once I realized I did like him back the words out of my mouth were "I can't believe I really am"
